About this film

Lang is an incredible director and this is one of the first “talkies” he ever made. This thriller starring the (now) famous Peter Lorre is an expressionistic tale of a psychotic child murderer who has successfully evaded the Berlin police for several months. As the Berlin police turn up the heat in order to catch the pedophile, the criminal underworld begins to find their activities becoming more and more restricted by police intervention. So, these criminals decide to take matters into their own hands and catch the child killer themselves by forming a vast network of spies and informants. With an ingenious mise-en-scene and a brilliant use of leitmotifs (Greig’s “Peer Gynt Suite” will never be the same to you after seeing this film), this film is a fascinating juxtaposition of crime and justice, leading you to question where the line of good and evil is really drawn.
