About this film
This one of the most amazing silent films ever made. Often credited as the first science fiction film ever made, Metropolis is about a futuristic city and the oppression of the blue-collar workers who keep it running. Problems arise when the worker’s underground leader is kidnapped and an evil robot clone of her is made in order to crush the underground rebellion, resulting in nearly disastrous consequences.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are going to watch this film, you have to make sure that you get the right edition (there are some out on DVD that are simply abominable). My favorite version is the 1984 re-release of the film which is scored by Giorgio Moroder. Not only is the soundtrack just full of great 80s music (featuring such greats as Pat Benetar and Queen’s Freddie Mercury), but it is one of the few versions that has fully restored many scenes that were deleted from the original American release of the film. These omissions make the film significantly more difficult to understand (and fully appreciate!), so it’s vital that you get an edition with those features. The edition we own, the Restored Authorized Version, is a good one.
