Alyssa's Thoughts
In the gritty, honest style of the French New Wave, this whimsical film depicts a day in the life of the early Beatles. Nobody expected A Hard Day’s Night to be much more than a quick exploitation of a passing musical fad, but upon its release it had fans (and even the stuffiest of critics) laughing and offering the highest praise. What surprised me later in my film studies was when I learned that nearly the entire screenplay was scripted (only a total of two scenes are improvised). This was surprising because the film feels so wonderfully honest and almost documentary-like. Screenwriter Alun Owen followed the Beatles around for several days trying to capture the essence of each individual Beatles’ personality: their deadpan faces, their laconic, cheeky brand of humor and droll style of speech. He certainly captured them well. The Beatles’ today even remark on how uncannily true-to-reality Owen’s script was. All in all, films with this kind of cinematic vivacity is hard to come across today.
