Alyssa's Thoughts

I realized while making this CD that "Hello Goodbye" is probably one of my all-time favorite tracks by the Beatles. I just love it. And yes, it was the inspiration for this theme. I expanded the theme to include break-up songs because Chris complained that he wouldn't have enough Hello or Goodbye songs to fill a whole CD. (You'll notice that the majority of his tracks are break-up songs.)

This CD has a lot of songs that I really enjoy, so I'm really happy with how it turned out. I did my best to alternate between Hellos and Goodbyes. I was able to make it work with a few "Hello" bonus tracks (Ned Flanders, Dane Cook). It's funny how I tended to have more Goodbyes than Hellos.

American Hi Fi's "The Breakup Song" signals the beginning of my section of break up songs (all three of them). Incidentally, Frank Sinatra's version of "One For My Baby" is a heart-rending song written by Johnny Mercer at the end of his affair with Judy Garland. He wrote the song when he realized it was never going to work out between them, that she wasn't going to leave her husband for him. The song is just dripping with emotion.

In terms of the Alyssa Challenge, the Beatles were easy to fit on since they were the inspiration. TMBG makes a brief appearance with the third of the Fingertips: "I hear the wind blow. I hear the wind blow. It seems to say, 'Hello. Hello. I'm the one who loves you so." Sting was really hard to get on the CD. I put on "Bring on the Night" because Sting sings the lyric "God bid yesterday good-BYEEEEEEE" several times.

Special thanks to Garth for suggesting Supertramp's "Goodbye Stranger."

I love my final track: the Vandal's raucous version of "So Long, Farewell" from The Sound of Music. Au yeah.
