Alyssa's Thoughts

A lot of research went into this CD. I did several searches on the Internet and on Rhapsody (our music service) to find the perfect tracks for this theme. Monty Python's "Money Song," Ella Fitzgerald's "Betcha Nickel," Lionel Ritchie's "Penny Lover," and Abba's "Money, Money, Money" are the fruits of that search.

Some of the tracks were inspired by movies. I was really proud of myself for thinking to put on "Gimme Some Money" by the faux band Spinal Tap (arguably the film that invented the mockumentary genre). I'm also especially proud of the choice to put on the "Gold Digger's Song" from The Gold Diggers of 1933, a whimsical Busby Berkeley musical. (Don't know the song? Hint: "We're in the money.")

So, there were about way too many Beatles tracks about money. I could have put on their version of "Money (That's What I Want)" but I opted for the original version instead. I could have also put on "You Never Give Me Your Money," "Can't Buy Me Love," and "Penny Lane." And I felt REALLY stupid that I forgot about "Taxman." (That's why it was put onto next month's CD: The Song That Got Away.)

"Brand New Day" was a bit of a stretch, but Sting sings "We'll sell the stock and spend all the money" in the chorus of the song. TMBG's "Minimum Wage" is such an awesome track, it obviously had to go on. Apparently, Chris agrees with me.

Special thanks to Garth for suggesting the Pet Shop Boys, Dire Straits, and (of course) Rush.

Chris's Thoughts

I really liked making this CD. I think that it has a lot of great songs on it and this is the first CD where I took Alyssa's idea and included sound clips from different movies (2 from The Little Rascals, one from The Simpsons and one from Star Wars).

The bad thing about this CD is that a couple of the songs I got drag on for too long--"I Wanna Be Rich," "For the Love of Money," and "Dollar Wine" repeat themselves a little too much.

"Tall Tall Trees" makes me think of my sister who, for some reason, likes this song. I like it too, but more for it's campy value.

I've been wanting to include "Superman's Song" on a CD for a long time now. Even putting it on this one is a stretch, but it works. I've also wanted to include "Mr. Wendal" for a while as well. This was a good CD for that.

"Arthur's Theme" is the theme from a movie about a millionaire (apparently--I've actually never seen the movie). But this song always makes me think of my mom doing Jazzercize in the mornings. This was the "Cool Down" song.

"Jesus He Knows Me" is a song about a hypocritical televangelist. The video is pretty interesting, and I like how the song mocks the idea of buying one's way into heaven (although listening to them say "Jesus" over and over is a little questionable). It makes me think of my uncle Duane because he introduced the song to me.
